All of us have things in our lives we want to do and things we have to do. Maybe you want to start going to the gym more regularly, or you’d like to read more books this year. Are you, like most people, wistful that you had more time to do what you want to do in addition to what you have to do?
Time management is essential to achieving these goals, but some other steps must come before it. By the time you are defining these steps (keeping a journal is preferred so you can see what gets revealed to you about yourself), they will serve as a stepping stone towards achieving that work and life cycle completion flow where your dreams do come true and all those things take place that should for the current stage in your life.
- List Your Goals
We all have goals that evolve frequently and which mirror other aspects of our lives at that moment. Make a list of what you need to do and rank each item from most important to least important. When creating this list, it’s important to focus on tangible goals as well as personal ones.
- List Your Daily Schedule
While we want more hours in the day, everyone has 24 hours. Some of these hours we spend to sleep and some to work and recreation. Write up your routine and write the things that you have to do because they were a commitment. These might be work commitments for you, or school sport commitments with the kids.
- You Are Not Just Your Work Goals, Put Personal Ones First
Don’t scoff at the time available to pursue what you want, especially when doing so is aligned with your life’s goals or well-being. Track family time, as well as other important life activities that need your time and attention.
Stick to the Schedule (except for an Emergency)
The vast majority of people who try a daily schedule follow it for a while but not long enough to establish the practice as a habit. Keeping your new cohabitation mode of working and living alive will require effort, the same it took to make it a habit; habits take approximately 3 weeks. But, you need to protect your own personal goals at all costs. You won’t have to think about them twice, but there will be an adjustment period, so for now you must keep a tight grip on your time.
Success should feel fulfilling, not exhausting.
